What is Wellness NOW?
For the first time in the history of our nation, American children may live shorter lives than their parents.
We all know the problems. Obesity and tobacco are among the worst killers. But we don’t have to let this happen. We’ve talked about poor health for long enough—it’s time to act.
Along with our partners, the Oklahoma City-County Health Department is launching a new community health initiative. OCCHD is committed to working with our partners to challenge entrenched behaviors and attitudes about health and to take on the structural and economic obstacles to wellness. Working together as a community, we can change course now to help ensure long, healthy lives for our children.
Here’s a video of our April 1, 2010 press conference:
Health at Work
OCCHD and Turning Point are making it easy for businesses of any size to implement workplace wellness programs.
Wellness programs can reduce risk factors for diabetes, high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease—and research clearly shows that for every dollar spent on wellness, businesses can recover many times that investment in reduced absenteeism and other health related costs.
We can assist in finding cost-effective ways of setting up health screenings, smoke-free workplaces, nutrition counseling, fitness programs, and much more.

Health at School
In partnership with public schools in Oklahoma County, OCCHD is actively working to reduce childhood obesity.
Nearly one in every three children in our county is overweight or obese—and those children are at risk for multiple health problems later in life.
OCCHD can assist in finding ways of making school lunches more nutritious and in reducing easy access to junk food. We can provide nutrition counseling and information for teachers, and help with setting up fun and effective fitness programs as part of the curriculum or after school.
For more information, please visit our School Health section.
Health at Home
Making healthy lifestyle choices can be tough. So it’s essential that our communities support accessible and safe outdoor spaces and exercise opportunities—as well as easy access to affordable, nutritious food.
OCCHD is working with cities and community groups across the country to make that happen.
