Teen Health Services

IT’S YOUR FUTURE. YOU CAN PROTECT IT!

The Oklahoma City County Health Department (OCCHD) is dedicated to improving the health, safety, and wellness of teens. Find out what you need to know to protect yourself.

As a teen, you have more power than anyone to prevent unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted infections (STIs). It’s your body and your health. Take care of it!

It doesn’t matter what sex or gender your partner is, you both need to be protected. If you are having sex, you can protect yourself and your partner from pregnancy, STIs, and HIV (the human immunodeficiency virus). Even if you are not having sex yet, it is important to know how to stay healthy and be prepared.

Confidential family planning appointments are available to teens regardless of one’s sex or gender. These preventive health services are made available through the Title X (ten) federal family planning program and include:

CONDOMS
Available for free and without seeing a provider.
STI & HIV TESTING

Screening for sexually transmitted infections including HIV, Hepatitis C, syphilis, chlamydia and gonorrhea.

EMERGENCY CONTRACEPTION
Sometimes called the “morning after pill,” available within three days (or 72 hours) after unprotected intercourse and can greatly reduce the chance of pregnancy.

COST?

Fees are based on your ability to pay. Services are usually low or no cost and determined on a sliding scale according to your income level. Individuals will not be turned away or denied services for an inability to pay.

Confidential

CONFIDENTIALITY

It is the policy of OCCHD to always encourage minors (teens under the age of 18) to discuss their healthcare needs with their parents or guardians. However, a parent or guardian is not required to receive family planning services, including STI testing and birth control.

All examinations are done in private. No other persons may be present – this includes parents and guardians.

Your visit will always be confidential. We do not disclose information about you or your visit to anyone without your permission. We cannot acknowledge a client’s presence in our clinic. Results can only be presented to the client. The clinic will provide translation services when needed.

DO I NEED AN APPOINTMENT?

For more timely service we recommend you call ahead to make an appointment. However, we will accept walk-ins up to an hour before closing.

Please note we may not be able to provide some services or exams with children present. We encourage you to make childcare arrangements before coming into the clinic for your appointment. If you have any questions or concerns please notify us when you call to schedule your appointment.

HELPFUL INFORMATION FOR TEENS

WHAT ABOUT HPV?

HPV, or the human papillomavirus, is extremely common. Some types of HPV can cause genital warts and others can cause cancer (cervical, anal, penile, vaginal, vulvar and oral). The good news is that the HPV vaccine can protect you from the most common types of the virus.

Guarding against HPV requires early prevention, before someone is exposed to the virus through sexual or intimate contact. Vaccines are recommended for both females and males at age 11, but can be given to adolescents and young adults through age 26.

However, for minors, a parent or legal guardian must be present with you to receive the HPV vaccine. Talk to your parents or guardians about getting the HPV vaccine with us today.
